Welcome to the colorful Ulster village of Ballybucklebo, where two doctors work hand in hand to mend the bodies and spirits of the town's diverse and engaging inhabitants. But who is looking after the wounded hearts of the doctors?

After less than a year, young Barry Laverty, M.B., is settling in to the village, with only a few months to go before he becomes a full partner in the practice. He's looking forward to becoming a fixture in the community, until an unexpected romantic reversal gives him second thoughts. Will he truly be happy tending to routine coughs and colds for the rest of his career? After all, even when a more challenging case comes along, like a rare tropical disease, all he can do is pass it on to a qualified specialist or big-city hospital. As much as Barry enjoys the rough and tumble of life in County Down, is running a humble GP's shop all he wants out of life?

Barry's mentor, Doctor Fingal Flahertie O'Reilly, is going through some personal upheavals as well. After mourning his deceased wife for decades, he's finally allowed a new woman into his life. But this budding courtship is not going over well with Kinky Kincaid, the doctors' redoubtable housekeeper, who fears having her position usurped by O'Reilly's new flame. Tact, diplomacy, and a fair amount of blarney may be required to restore peace to the household.

Meanwhile, life goes on in Ballybucklebo, presenting both doctors with plenty of distractions from their own troubles. From a mysterious outbreak at the local school to a complicated swindle involving an unlucky racehorse, the two partners will need all of their combined wit and compassion to put things right again - just in time for their lives to change forever.

An Irish Country Courtship (Audible Audio Edition) Patrick Taylor John Keating Macmillan Audio Books

If you are a fan of Patrick Taylor's lovely Irish Country Village of Ballybucklebo, you will love this follow up story which centers on the gregarious senior country general practitioner Dr. Fingal Flaherty O'Reilly as he reflects on his former medical student and intern times and tribulations while awaiting the surgery and post-operative motorcycle accident recovery of a favorite red-haired local Donald Donnelly. With time to kill in the hospital's lounge area, Dr. O'Reilly recounts when he meet nursing student Kaitlan "Kitty" O'Halleran, with her amber flecked eyes, their early courtship days and the challenges and strains they faced in controlling the heart in the midst of completing medical studies. Long time widowed Mrs. Maureen "Kinky" Kincaid, Dr. O'Reilly's trusted housekeeper from Cork, is abruptly taken ill. Her subsequent hospitalization gives her time to reflect on her future. O'Reilly's assistant Dr. Barry Laverty considers specializing that could take him away from Ballybuckleboo and the colorful local personalities he is growing to love. This installment concludes with O'Reilly's Grand Wedding and the realization of his true love for Kitty. Concerns and anticipated tensions between Mrs. O'Reilly and Kinky arise. John Keats narrates the audio CD.

An Irish Country Courtship (Audible Audio Edition) Patrick Taylor John Keating Macmillan Audio Books Reviews

Patrick Taylor is a terrific author, his characters are alive and believable. Being Irish and in the medical field I am amused by the “doctoring” of that era in that place. The main objection I have is all the gratuitous cursing, I don’t believe any intelligent person speaks like that, I love his stories but the language is offensive and ruins a good story. No more of Patrick Taylor for me.
I am hooked on this series and listen to it over and over again. I'm so happy I have the audiobooks because John Keating is an excellent narrator and I love how he differentiates not only between characters, but their regional accents as well. He adds another dimension to the books. I tarted with the first one and liked and nejoyed it, so I got the econd one. Then I was hooked. They're not heavy but the characters do change and develop as the books go along. I do recommend they are nejoyed in the order written. I listen to all the ones that take place in the '60s and then went back. But I missed so much that way. I amanxiously awaiting the October release of the next book in the series.
In this series, I first read "An Irish Country Christmas". I thoroughly enjoyed it. Its simplicity was charming, and a tonic to my current crazed and hectic pace of life. I immediately bought others in the series.

This book was the next one to be read. I enjoyed it, but I did not find it as endearing as the first one read. It may be that it was just bad timing. I find that a great book is a combination of the story itself and the timing of when read in life. The two must be in-sync to be a great read.

This book carried over the joy in telling the story of a small town in Ireland during 1965. It continued to follow 2 doctors as they faced personal and professional challenges. Unfortunately, the dashed romance of the younger doctor seemed heavy-handed. I found it difficult to empathize with the young man as he wallowed in doubt and self-assessment. But, that part of the story aside, I did enjoy the book. I will probably read others in the series, especially as they are already at the top of my closet! However, I will move to more "serious" reads first...which are also waiting for selection in my closet!
At one point, I absolutely loved this series, set in 1960s Northern Ireland and involving a senior general practitioner doctor in Ballybucklebo and his newer, younger, GP doctor, and their housekeeper, Kinky. However, I did not like the fourth book in the series at all, so it was quite some time til I read the fifth book, this one.

This one has everything I loved about this series. Great, somewhat heartwarming at times, stories about the doctors and the townspeople, in sickness and it health.

The focus in this book is the love life of the older doctor, roughly 25 years after his wife was killed in World War 2, as well as the love life of the younger doctor, whose girlfriend just dumped him.

Another focus is whether the younger doctor will want to settle down, as a small town GP, or whether he'd prefer to be a specialist.

Horseracing also figures prominently, as the local politician is trying to hoodwink a group of his employees out of their ownership of a racehorse.

All in all, a charming, heartwarming, pleasant story!!
I just finished the last book in the Irish Country series( Irish Country Practice), and now I am wondering if another book will continue the series? If you like character driven books, this series reads like a Jan Karon Mitford set in northern Ireland in the 1960s. Or, if you loved James Herriot's veternarian series, set in Yorkshire England, this series is quite similar. I work in a hospital, so I loved the medical details that showed the changes in medicine before antibiotics( while Fingal is training) and later how the discovery of what caused hemolytic disease of the newborn, could finally in the 60's be treated with RHogam, as just 2 examples. Another thing I love about the books, is how well they highlight Irish culture and allow the reader to experience "craic" with the antics on Donal, the pub trips of Fingal and Barry, and the mouth watering meals created by Kinky their housekeeper. The Irish phrases (with glossaries in every book) make me feel like I am back in Ireland. I hope more books are in Patrick Taylor's vivid imagination so I can contine escaping to his Irish world!
